Welcome to Alderwood Resort. A collection of cozy cabins and a lake house nestled on the shore of Alder Lake, part of the Manitowish Waters Chain of Lakes. As 4th generation cranberry farmers in the local area, heritage is important to our family. Our family purchased Alderwood Resort in 1988 to honor the family vacation traditions Alderwood has been a part of since the 1930s when our red cabins were built. Whether you visit to relax or to find adventure, we hope you are inspired by our community and return soon.

lEARN MORE ABOUT OUR FARMING STORY

born & RAISED IN NORTHERN WISCONSIN...

We joined our family business to continue the Bartling story for the next generation. Becca manages all things Alderwood, while David is a cranberry farmer and lends a hand on big projects. We’ve discovered how to combine our skill sets (we’re both engineers by education) and passions to merge new ideas with a nostalgic Northwoods resort. In our free time, we're happiest sharing our love of fresh air with our little ones, Lucy + Ford.

qUAINT & COZY MAGIC

“Alderwood has that quaint and cozy magic. The grounds are impeccably clean as well as the cabins. All of the cabins are as described, each one unique and delightful. Thank you for your hospitality and for carrying on the tradition.”

- Susan P.

We had an amazing stay...

“ I would highly recommend The Brick House! The house sits right on the lake with two docks to tie up our boat on. The provided kayaks were a ton of fun! The house itself is very roomy and yet, cozy at the same time, with beautiful views. The house is easily navigable for older folks or those with mobility limitations. Alderwood Resort was a fantastic host, always quick to respond, and very helpful. We had an amazing stay and hope to return next fall.”

a lovely getaway...

“This resort was a lovely getaway. Perfect if you want to get away from the busyness of life, enjoy the outdoors, or spend undistracted time with your family. The grounds were well kept with a lot of activities to do just within the grounds itself. The cabin we stayed in had a great view of the lake and a screened in porch, which was great to relax on.”

- Ashley B.

As seen in a 1938 Chamber of Commerce Visitor Guide, Alderwood Resort was originally named "Chain O' Lakes Lodge or Chain of Lakes Lodge " and owned by Edmund Kmentt. The original red cabins are thought to have been built in the mid-1930s.

1930s to 1940s

The property was purchased on October 27, 1944 by Edward and Cora Scotten and later renamed Alderwood Lodge. Pictures include Edward and Cora Scotten -- 1944 Real Estate Transfer -- Cora Scotten standing with sister Marie Cagney on a newly cut road into Alderwood Lodge -- 1946 Chicago Tribune Ads

1944 to 1948

1948 to 1988

From 1948 to 1988, Floyd and Baye Christensen from Necedah, Wisconsin owned Alderwood Resort as a family estate. Floyd was president of F.M. Reed Lumber Company with lumber yards in Necedah, Mauston, New Lisbon, and Camp Douglas, Wisconsin. Floyd and Baye married in 1919 and had three children Robert, James, and Patricia Holst. The families each had one of the cottages designated as theirs; Robert’s family (Bayview), James's (Lakeview), and Patty’s (Beachview). During the first years of Christensen's ownership, Alderwood was co-owned by George "Babe" and Lucille Speas, a Bartling relative.

1988 to today

In 1988, Peter and Michael Bartling, purchased Alderwood Resort along with 45 acres of wooded land to expand their family cranberry business. This expansion of their traditional cranberry farm was the beginning of an interest in local real estate investments.
